Solo scramble.

Coffin Mountain may not be much to look at and it doesn’t sport a particularly breath-taking summit view. However, it does offer a good dose of hands-on scrambling on the north ridge/face, as I found out on this day.

On a descent of Mount Livingstone in December of 2006, Mark and I had commented that the north ridge looked to have some interesting rock. I went back to find out if this was in fact the case and was more than pleasantly surprised to find the north ridge/face an interesting ascent with tons of room for easy to difficult scrambling up good quality rock.

Once atop the ridge, the walk to the summit was rather anti-climatic, as was the lack-lustre summit view. For a little variety on descent, I descended the south ridge a short distance and then down west-facing rubble and scree slopes. Though far from aesthetic it was a pleasant change.
