Hiking and snowshoeing with Mark.

Our first trip since the arrival of Mark and Keri's son, Rogan Warwick Nugara on December 8, 2010. A short trip was definitely in order, due to an extended absence from the mountains for both of us and plans for New Year’s Eve later in the day. A possible breakdown in the weather in the afternoon was also good reason to pick an objective that would be easily reached in a short amount of time – King Creek Ridge was a perfect choice. Though we had made several winter attempts in the past, the summit had continually eluded us.

We completed the first half of the snowy ascent on foot and then switched to snowshoes for the second half and the ridgewalk to the summit. The snowshoes were essential for the rigdewalk, as the snow was deep and unsupportive. Views of the magnificent Opal Range were fantastic throughout. Mount Brock brought with it a new significance, given an ascent with Kevin several months earlier.

With a healthy wind-chill, temperatures at the summit were brutally cold. We quickly ran over to the slightly lower north summit and then returned to the true summit, for a few photo opportunities with a well-placed Canadian flag.

The weather breakdown was well forecast and continued to deteriorate as we enjoyed a very easy and fast descent. Another excellent day in the beautiful Canadian Rockies.
