Wedge Smear – January 4, 2008

Fall height:        30 m
Grade:              WI3

Ice climbing with Kevin.

We decided against an ice climb up Cougar Canyon , when it appeared that there were already 2 parties ahead of us. Instead we settled for a very enjoyable day on Wedge Smear, located on the northeast side of Limestone Mountain . The main route on the fall was steeper than expected (vertical in places) and so Kevin led a pitch up the left side and then set up a top-rope right down the middle. We then climbed the main pitch several times each. Kevin gave me some very important tips on technique that made my second ascent much easier.

After that, Kevin took a more direct and challenging route up the fall, where the ice was thin and melted out in places. He made it look easy and was up in the pitch in no time. A good day of fun and learning.

Arriving at the fall; the main line is just right of centre
