Mount Lady MacDonald (lower summit)

November 11, 2002

Mountain height: approximately 2580 m
Elevation gain:    approximately 1250 m

Scrambling with Mark.

Having heard and read extensively about Mount Lady MacDonald’s fiercely exposed summit ridge, we had little hope of making the true summit of the mountain in November. However, it was certainly worth a trip to check out what all the fuss was about.

The hike to the defunct teahouse was relatively easy, though longer than expected. A steeper trail in the scree then led to the false summit. One look at the connecting to the true summit and we could easily see “what the fuss was all about!” There isn’t much of a ridge to speak off and a fall down the left side would be instant death, a fall down the right – death by cheese-grater!

We were quite happy to call the false summit our highpoint of the day. A very easy descent ended a worthwhile and illuminating trip.

A cairn marks the spot where many call it a day. The true summit is at the right. Sun on the peak and dark skies behind created very moody conditions.
