Day 3 - Hiking

Day 3 started with a solo early morning scramble up to a huge plateau near the campground we were staying at. It’s quite staggering how much terrain there is to explore around Moab.

Upon return the four of us drove back into Arches National Park to hike the Devil’s Garden trail. Although I absolutely loved the Delicate Arch hike on Day 1, the Devil’s Garden proved to be the hiking highlight of the entire trip – multiple arches, incredible rock formations at every turn, wonderful hiking and even a little scrambling!

The Skyline Arch is clearly visible from the road

The Tunnel Arch is seen early in the hike

The Landscape Arch is world famous, as it is the 5th longest arch on the planet

So does Evan

Approaching the Double O Arch. Someone is walking across the top of the upper arch

Nicole heading towards the bottom arch

The Double O Arch is definitely one of the most impressive in the park

Note the family that has hiked to the other side

At the top

We decided to forgo the walk over the arch to the other side. To quote one of my favourite lines from the brilliant movie The Shawshank Redemption, "Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes, really....pressure....and time....". That arch will someday fall and I wouldn't want to be on it when it does!

Back down, looking through the big O

Hiking over to the rock pinnacle called Dark Angel, at the far left

Stunningly beautiful rock

Evan checks out the climbing routes - they are hard!!!
