Nihahi Ridge South Summit IV

November 13, 2023

Mountain height: 2355 m
Elevation gain:    780 m
Ascent time:        3:10
Descent time:      2:40

Scrambling with Mark.

Given the decent weather forecast for the front ranges, this eventually turned into a very disappointing day. We expected clear skies around Nihahi Ridge but as soon as some elevation was gained, the blue was replaced with grey, views to the west ceased to exist, and the wind made for brutally cold conditions. In fact, we considered bailing on even attempting the south summit of the ridge.

However, two brave individuals were ahead of us, making good progress up the increasingly challenging ridge. We continued on, soon crossing paths as they descended. The two had made the south summit and then bailed. We did the same. At the summit, conditions were unfriendly, at best! No views and an intolerably cold wind prompted a hasty retreat, after we took a mere handful of photos.

Could have been better but could have been worse. We’ll take it just for the exercise!

Glasgow North, Garriochmill Peak, and Mount Glasgow are all visible on approach

The first part of Nihahi Ridge

Close-up

The brave souls who led the way. They were much faster than us and reached the south summit long before we did.

The route ahead and still optimistic about the weather

However, there are already signs of nastiness coming in from the southwest

Followed this nice trail around the southeast side, but eventually a steep climb back towards the ridge was required

Back on track

At least we get shelter from the wind for now

Approaching a short scrambly section that breaks through the rock band

There is it

Goodbye blue skies

Hello grey skies

The snow and ice add spice to the upper part of the ascent

Miserable!

Approaching the steep upper ridge

Mark follows

One of the trickier steps

We are up the tricky stuff

Easier ridgewalk to the summit, but we were pummeled by vicious winds throughout

Final section of the ascent

At the South Summit. The true summit is just left of centre.

Not the view we were hoping for

The Sun tries to break through

Descending

Off the tough stuff

The highpoint in the centre makes for a pleasant diversion, but not today

The good weather conditions did persist to the east

We did take a minor detour to check out the cool ridge going to that highpoint

Same as above

Back on the sheltered east side of the ridge

Same as above

Glasgow reappears after being consumed by clouds through much of the day

Stayed high on the east slopes on return instead of using that good trail

Guess we should have picked Powderface Ridge (left) or Forgetmenot Ridge (right) if we wanted good weather

Easy road hike to end the day

The End
