Mount St. Piran

Mountain height: 2649 m
Elevation gain: 900 m
Scrambling and snow slogging with
Mark.
Completing this
easy scramble/steep hike in early November may not have been one of our wiser
decisions. A packed down snow trail made easy work of the first part of the hike to Lake
Agnes. However, beyond the lake, we were forced to make our own trail through increasingly
deep levels of unconsolidated snow. We quickly lost the general direction of
the trail that branches off towards St. Piran and simply slogged our way up to
the summit. And it was a trail-breaking wallow of epic proportions!
Nevertheless, after
considerable effort we did arrive at the summit. The weather was far from perfect
at this point. In fact, it was just good enough for us to see what we were missing – already an excuse to return someday!
While the
ascent was soul-sucking, the descent more than compensated. We were able to
glissade a huge portion of the peak. And as we did, the clear skies we wanted
at the summit finally arrived – better late than never. Once back on the trail
we broke, following it back to the start was mercifully easy.
An excellent
day out, but as stated, entirely worthy of a return visit on a clear day.

Mount Lefroy makes a grandiose appearance as we slog our way up to the summit

At the summit, Haddo Peak and Mount Aberdeen are front and centre

Lake Louise and the Chateau are far below

Awesome conditions for glissading

The skies finally clear, but we are halfway down
