Sofa Mountain reconnaissance – October 18, 2009

Round-trip time:           5:05

Hiking with Mark.

With a few hours to kill and fairly cloudy skies, we set off to explore the southeast side of Sofa Mountain, hoping an interesting route to the summit might be possible.

Although the route to the base of the mountain appeared to be straightforward from the road, it turned out to be far from easy. First, there was the swampy marshes near the road, followed by a short but very nasty bushwhack through dense alders, and endless trudging over unseen hills to finish it off.

Approaching the base of Sofa, it became clear the northeast side of the mountain would require some very difficult scrambling or easy climbing. We were equipped for neither and settled for an interesting side-slope around a small section of the peak, highlights of which were the whitish coloured rock, a couple of small tarns, and several huge boulders. We did find a slightly easier route for the return trip.

A decent day of off-trail hiking and route-finding.

Morning light and clouds over Waterton; Bellevue Hill, Galwey, Dungarvan, Lakeview Ridge, and Cloudy Ridge are visible
