Moab IV

Having experienced the wonders of Moab, Utah about a year ago (Moab III), Dan was all in for another round of climbing and canyoneering adventures. This would be my fourth trip to Moab (Moab I, Moab II). Unfortunately neither Evan, Jordan nor Raff were able to join us – hopefully next time.

 Day 1

Leaving Friday after work, we arrived near Moab quite late on Saturday afternoon. Not wanting to waste any time, we made our way to the San Rafael Swell area to check out what it had to offer. Although we only had time to visit the Little Spotted Wolf climbing slabs, we both agreed that this area did not hold much appeal for us from a climbing perspective – steep slabs covered in sand, with minimal protection – slippery and not fun. Dan led both pitches of the 5.6R Raucous Wren and we were both relieved to rappel down and be done with the route. However, of what we saw, the area looks to be a hiker’s dream – tons of interesting terrain, colourful rock and many areas to explore. I would happily return to do just that.

Certainly a very colourful area. Too bad about the cloud cover.

Wolf Canyon looks to be a very interesting hike

Approaching the climbing slabs

Dan is all smiles for now

Raucous Wren goes up the right side of this slab

Dan starts up the route. There were some great cam placements low on the route. Too bad they disappeared higher up.

Looking up the 2nd pitch that Dan has completed. It's steep and slick!

The other side of the valley gets some Sun

Dan rappels the 1st pitch

For me, the colourful landscape provided more entertainment than the actual climb

Heading into the canyon before darkness sets in

  Not a naturally occurring phenomena!

Dan encounters a less fortunate being

Looking farther up the canyon. Would have loved to explore more but time wasn't on our side at this point.

Leaving the canyon and going to Moab!
