Ivana Humpaless attempt
October 19, 2015
Climbing with Mark.
“Ivana Humpaless” is a 5.6 trad climb that
can be found in the Kananaskis Obscure
online document. We had high hopes of completing the 6-pitch route and then
finding an easy descent off the ridge the climb reaches.
After
hiking up the now quite familiar
drainage north of Wasootch Peak, we geared up at what we thought of the
start
of the climb. Unfortunately, that may not have been the case. Although
the
first pitch fit the description, we were soon on challenging and
difficult-to-protect rock that was straining the limits of our comfort
levels. This
terrain did not match anything in the description. We fumbled around
for an
hour or so, trying to get back on track, but things just became
increasingly
daunting. Wisely, we chose to cut our loses and rappel back down to the
drainage.
Not the outcome we had hoped for but still a very interesting and rewarding day out.

The Wasootch drainage has plenty of interesting features

Mount Lorette behind us

Atop the first pitch. We thought we were on route here but things quickly changed.

A host of familiar peaks to the west, including Sparrowhawk, Wind, Allan, Lougheed, and Collembola

The ridge to the right of Lorette offers a fun, but very exposed ride to the top

It's possible we should have been going up there but we couldn't get over to it

Mark finishes another pitch

The end of the line

Rappel time

Halfway down

Almost all the way down

Looking back up the face

And back down the drainage
